âWhat are you dressed like that for?â Tyâs mother asked a little over a week later. She scowled at the old jeans and T-shirt that he was wearing.
âLeave him alone,â Dad said, and Ty gave him a smile of thanks. âHeâs old enough to make his own decisions.
âHeâs going out with that white boy again,â she accused. âAt least dress in clothes that donât look like they belong at Goodwill.â
âMase was nice, and he was well-read and smart. I think Ty could do worse.â His father dropped his head behind his laptop screen as though he had said what he wanted to and was now getting out of the line of fire. Which was probably smart, given the look of death that Tyâs mother sent his way.
âYou know how I feel about this,â she snapped.
âItâs how I feel that matters, and I like Mase.â He held his motherâs steely gaze. âI know what youâre going to say, and I think itâs time I tried to find a place of my own. I have a good job, and I want a life.â
âYou have one here,â his mother said, and Dad scoffed from behind his computer.
âNo. I have a mother who wants to decide how Iâll live my life and then shoves people at me that she thinks are acceptable.â He also wanted to be able to entertain guests, and he couldnât do that under his parentsâ roof.
âButâ¦.â For one of the first times in his life, Ty had left his mother speechless.
âYou know that both your mother and I had hoped that you would take your education further. That was so important to her and me.â His dad motioned, and Tyâs mother sat down in the chair nearest him. âMany things can be taken away, but not that. The courts can rule one thing today and change it tomorrow. Laws can be written and then changed back. Your mother and I have seen that time and again. But education is yours, and what you know can determine how far you go in life. Especially for people like us.â
âI know, Dad. Iâve heard that from you and Mom all my life. But it isnât what I want⦠at least not right now. I want something else. I want to create things, and Iâm doing that. You and Mom teach people, and you write papers and develop methodologies and theories that you test and try to prove. Thatâs fine, but it isnât what I want to do.â He was coming to realize that there were a lot of things he had just gone along with rather than standing up for himself. Most of the time it was just easier to do what his parents wanted.
In the last few weeks, things had changed, and Ty knew that was because of Mase. Heâd only known him for a short time, but Mase made him want things. And Ty was willing for fight for them. He needed more independence than he had now. It was past time that he stood on his own two feet without his mom and dad as a safety net under him.
